Just like Computer Operating Systems evolved, the Movie OS evolved in parallel. Here is my deduction of a Versioning Scheme:

Major Version

  1. Static screens -> noninteractive barely recognizable as computer screens e.g. first Star Trek series.
  2. Text only, very sparse graphics if only. E.g. Wargames, Tron.
  3. Graphics and text. Usage concept is not obvious. e.g. 2001, Star Trek the next Generation
  4. Full grapics, windowing concept, recognizable usage concept. Closely resembles current Operating Systems. E.g. Used whenever current computers are depicted.
  5. Holographic Imaging, may include 3D e.g. Minority Report, Avatar

Minor Version, depicts input method

  1. Keyboard
  2. Mouse
  3. Touch
  4. Gesture
  5. Voice

Examples

Minority Report: 4.6
Star Trek the next Generation: 2.4 and 2.9
