Some time ago I found a gnome theme, which does not totally suck and is also usable on Opensolaris. Not that Nimbus is ugly, but after some time, your eyes yearn for diversion.

Open the stage for:

Dust Sand

Version 0.3 of the theme is usable out of the box. Just import it using the apperarance preferencepane. It's in the Dust-extras Package. Take version 0.3, newer Versions have a dependency on murrine which has to be compiled separately.

The theme is rather pleasing on the eye. Some aspects of it do resemble the Mac OS X unified toolbars.

I did not yet find a suitable background for it, besides using a dark grey background with one of the wallpapers which adapt their color to the background color.

Be sure to select the Nimbus iconset, which fits better than the standard gnome iconset preselected with this theme.
I'd also recommend changing the 'selected' color to something more pleasing like a bright orange instead of the bland brown.

Btw, the theme is also bundled with Ubuntu, guess where the brown comes from.

What themes would you recommend?
